It was founded by Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois in 1809. The two entrepreneurs started the company with the purchase of a cognac distillery in Jarnac, France. The company grew quickly and by 1821, Courvoisiér was supplying cognac to the Prince of Wales.

In 1835, Courvoisiér  was appointed official cognac supplier to the British court. The company continued to grow and by the end of the 19th century, Courvoisier was the largest producer of cognac in the world.
